St Margaret’s rowers achieved impressive results at the Indoor Rowing Championships on Tuesday 28 May.
Students in Years 8 to 12 competed against other schools including Stuartholme, Brisbane Girls Grammar School, St Aidan’s, Lourdes Hill, Sommerville House, Brisbane State High School, All Hallows’ School and St Hilda’s School.
St Margaret’s Head of Rowing Jared Bidwell said the girls’ performance at the event indicated a promising season.
Lucy Bourke led the charge in the Year 8 individual ergo over 500m while Holly Carrigan in Year 9 finished third. Older sister Primrose charged home in the final 200 metres of her event finishing second in an incredibly tight finish with only .01 of a second separating first and second placings.
Shanelle Flute lead from the front to win the Year 11 2000 metre individual with Lily Devereaux putting in a gutsy effort in her individual 2000 metre race.
Meanwhile, the Year 8 relay team (Lucy Bourke, Indiahna Frawley, Inge Mellor, Charli Fahrensohn and Sally Bambling) displayed incredible resilience. After dropping back to midfield from an excellent start, the girls pulled together to prevail, finishing third in a tight finish for placings.
The Years 9, 10 and 12 relay teams each placed third.
The All Age Relay team, comprising two rowers from each year level, claimed victory.
“With these outstanding achievements I am confident it will be an exciting season ahead for St Margaret’s rowing,” said Mr Bidwell.
St Margaret’s Old Girl, rowing Olympian and current St Margaret’s rowing coach, Maddie Edmunds, presented to many of the placegetters on the night.
