Home away from home

Hannah Law from Swan Vale in New South Wales commenced boarding at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Year 10 after starting at the school as a day girl in Year 9.

Since then, she has developed independence and resilience with the support of boarding house staff and her fellow boarding sisters.

“My parents always wanted me to have a city boarding school education and the growth and opportunities that go with it.

“I wanted to broaden my horizons and living with 188 other girls from diverse backgrounds and cultures has certainly given me the chance to do just that.

“I’ve developed independence, made life-long connections and feel I will be well prepared for life when I leave,” Hannah said.

Hannah has embraced the opportunities at the school and all that living in Brisbane has to offer.

“I love the fact we are encouraged to find our passions,” she said.

“I’ve enjoyed playing both club and QG netball and being part of the backstage crew in the school musical.

“In boarding, there’s always activities scheduled on weekends such as shopping trips, football games at Suncorp Stadium and beach trips, which gives us the chance to explore Brisbane.

“I also went on an amazing trip to Japan earlier this year where I had the chance to immerse myself in a different culture,” Hannah said.

Being away at boarding school in the city hasn’t stopped Hannah from continuing her love of the country sport of campdrafting.

“I was a member of the school’s campdraft team in Year 9, competing in the High School Campdraft Percentile Cup. It was amazing to be able to compete for my school.

“I also compete individually and have won or placed in several campdraft competitions over the last few years,” Hannah said.

Although Hannah hasn’t quite settled on any plans for post school just yet, she has taken advantage of the opportunity to study a Certificate III in Agriculture while at St Margaret’s, which has equipped her with the knowledge, skills and experience to return home to work on her family’s horse stud and cattle farm if she chooses in the future.

“I love boarding – it really is my home away from home,” Hannah said.
