At St Margaret’s 1951-1954
Margaret Cameron is a noted Australian librarian, administrator and amateur ornithologist who has had a distinguished career in Australian academic librarianship. After some years’ service in the then Public Library of Queensland (now State Library of Queensland) and the Australian Reference Library at the Australian Consulate General, New York, Margaret was appointed to the staff of the Queensland University Library in 1964-1965 as Librarian of the Thatcher Memorial Library. From 1965-69, she was the Assistant Librarian in charge of Reference at Flinders University Library and from 1969-77 the Reader Services Librarian at Macquarie University Library.
Margaret was the recipient of an Australian American Education Foundation (Fulbright) University Administrator Grant as well as a British Council Cultural Visitor. These awards supported visits to a number of North American and British university libraries, primarily to study methods of providing the reading material students need in connection with their courses, and also to look at automation as applied to reader services functions (circulation systems, automated information retrieval) and services to Open University students.
Between 1977-1986 she was the University Librarian at Deakin University Library. In 1986, she was appointed to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, a tenure she held for three years.
In 1990, Margaret became a Member of the Order of Australia for services to library services, to education and to ornithology.
In 1996, she spent some time as Temporary Lecturer in library and information services at Ballarat University.
Margaret has dedicated her time to several groups and associations including as a Member of the Library Board of Victoria, the Council of the State Library of Victoria and the Yarra-Melbourne Regional Library Corporation.
As a keen ornithologist, Margaret joined the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) in 1969 for which she served as President between 1986 and 1989. In 1993, she was elected a Fellow of the RAOU. She is an expert at bird identification in the field and a competent bander and counter of birds. She has taken an active role in the Victorian Wader Studies Group and with BATH (Birders Aiding the Handbook).
In 1999, Margaret became a Doctor of Deakin University (Honorary degree).
