To our rowers competing at Head of the River this weekend, and our Club Netball teams taking to the court in their semi-finals, we wish you every success and know that you will represent St Margaret's with pride, determination and the spirit of our school community.

With so much happening both inside and outside the classroom, it is timely to reflect on the importance of regular attendance at school. At St Margaret’s, we are committed to helping every girl flourish academically, socially and emotionally. A key factor in achieving this is regular attendance at school. Recently, we have noticed an increase in students arriving late, leaving early and taking days away from school. While occasional absences are sometimes necessary, it is important to remember that every lesson, every interaction and every school day matters.

Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly achieve higher academic outcomes than those who are frequently absent. Research notes that poor attendance is associated with lower achievement in literacy and numeracy, reduced opportunities to learn, and a greater likelihood of leaving school with fewer qualifications. Research also demonstrates that absenteeism can lead to further absences over time, creating a pattern that becomes increasingly difficult to address.

Importantly, the impact of missing school is cumulative. Missing just one day every fortnight adds up to approximately four weeks of learning across a school year. Over the course of a student’s education, this can equate to the loss of significant instructional time.  

Attendance is about more than academic success. School is where students build friendships, develop resilience, participate in cocurricular activities, collaborate with peers and develop a strong sense of belonging. Arriving late or leaving early can mean missing important learning, wellbeing programs, year level activities, assemblies, rehearsals, sporting commitments and opportunities to connect with others.

We ask all families to support the school’s attendance expectations. Parents are required to notify the school of an absence by 8.20am on the morning of the absence. Students may not leave the school grounds during the school day without parent or guardian approval, and appointments should be arranged, wherever possible, to minimise the loss of class time.

As partners in your daughter’s education, we appreciate your support in ensuring she arrives on time, remains at school for the full day and attends consistently unless illness or other exceptional circumstances prevent her from doing so.

Year 12 Survey

By now, all our Year 12 parents should have received an email from specialist education consultancy MMG Education who are conducting an online survey of St Margaret’s Year 12 parents, on behalf of the school. The survey gives you the opportunity to express confidentially your views of the ways in which the school has met your needs and those of your daughter/s.

I would like to encourage all Year 12 families to complete the survey. Your feedback is invaluable and will assist the St Margaret’s School Council and Senior Leadership Team to review the school’s operations and plans for the future.

All responses will be treated by MMG Education in strict confidence and no parent will be identified to the school by MMG Education.

The following students will be required to attend Speech Night:

• All Years 11 and 12 students. All students in Year 12 will be required to wear a Church dress. Only prize winners in Year 11 will be required to wear a Church dress. Students in Year 11 who are not prize winners will wear their school middy.

• All boarders will be attending. Boarders who are not prize winners or in Year 12 will wear their school middy.

• All additional prize winners in Years 5-10 and musicians are required to wear a Church dress. 

The Church dress is available for purchase or hire from our Supplies Shop. 

• Year 12 Students will be able to go to the School Supplies Shop from Monday 7 September to arrange their Church dress. 

• Musicians can start arranging their Church Dress from Monday 14 September. 

• Prize winners will be able to arrange their Church Dress following the Prize Reading Assembly on Tuesday 6 October.

All non-prize winners in Years 5-10 are not required to attend. However, please be advised that we will continue to livestream our event and we encourage these students and their families to watch the event online.

Tickets will be released to Year 12 families first, then opened to the rest of the families of prize winners. We are currently in the process of finalising these details and will be in touch via email and eNews about these arrangements soon. Please note, your daughters will receive their tickets at school (they will not be sitting with you) and therefore you do not need to book seats for them.

Dr Beth-Sarah invited the students to reflect on how they see themselves, and to what extent the opinions of others impact the way that they see themselves. She reflected on the Latin root of the word respect, “spectare” meaning to “look again.” Inviting each of us to look again at another before we judge or make assumptions about their story. She invited us to repeat this process, look again, look again, look again. Forming a habit of respect that honours the dignity that every person holds within them. To do this, we listen to the symphony of stories all around us.

What better week to remember this than national Book Week, with its theme – “Symphony of Stories”. Each one of us holds within us so many stories to be told and to be heard, and together we create a symphony that holds within it a rich diversity that makes our community what it is.

This year, our dining hall has been transformed into The Library of Forgotten Tales, a magical space where hidden adventures and forgotten stories come to life. Throughout the week, boarders have enjoyed activities including Where's Wally?, Book Character Dress-Up Night, Potion Station, and a Scavenger Hunt and Pyjama Night.

As the heart of boarding life, the dining hall is more than just a place to eat. It is where girls gather each day to connect, unwind, and build friendships. By transforming this familiar space, we create opportunities for students to step away from their routines and experience the joy and wonder that stories can inspire.

For our younger boarders, Book Week encourages imagination, curiosity, and creativity, allowing them to explore new worlds and ideas. For our senior students, who are navigating assessments, assignments, and upcoming exams, it provides a valuable chance to switch off, relax, and enjoy a break from academic pressures.

These shared experiences support wellbeing by encouraging connection, belonging, and balance during a busy time of the year. Whether searching for hidden Wally cards, concocting potions, uncovering scavenger hunt clues, or simply enjoying the atmosphere at dinner, the girls are creating memories, strengthening friendships, and building the sense of community that makes boarding life so special.

Book Week is about more than celebrating books. It is a reminder of the importance of making time for creativity, friendship, and fun, helping every boarder feel connected, supported, and inspired.

At St Margaret’s, we are fortunate enough to have many teachers who are able and willing to give up a portion of their holidays to run additional feedback sessions and tutorials for Year 12 students during the September holidays. Please note that the timetable is organised with teacher availability in mind and not all teachers are available during the school holidays. While attendance at SWOTVAC is not compulsory, mock feedback will be provided in these sessions so students are strongly encouraged to attend any relevant sessions for their subject. The timetable for SWOTVAC is available on the Year 12 POD Page.

Year 11

At the end of next week, Year 11 students will have their study day before their exam block starts at the beginning of Week 9. This exam block contains the final assessment tasks of Units 1 and 2. The end of the term brings the final opportunity for students to move from one subject into another or to change from ATAR to Portfolio Pathway. Any students who are considering this should book an appointment with me via the POD as soon as possible.

Year 10

Year 10 students also have their Study Hall coming up on Tuesday 1 September and Wednesday 2 September. Around this time, some students may be reconsidering their subject choices for next year. These girls should book an appointment with me via the POD to discuss their options further.

Evidence for listening to music during study

• Listening to music during study can be helpful to certain students in distracting environments – for example, in a busy coffee shop. In this situation, music can replace irregular noises from the environment with a predictable, enjoyable source of stimulation.
• For some students, music can lower stress levels, which can help improve mood, motivation and study endurance.
• In some people, music has been shown to improve creativity and imagination during study sessions.

Evidence against listening to music during study

• Music with lyrics, or that is too fast paced, or that has a lot of changes in dynamics, has been shown to have a negative impact on study effectiveness.
• Research suggests that listening to some music has a detrimental impact on a student’s ability to undertake reading comprehension tasks or memorise content.
• Students who are musicians, or students who are introverted, often operate better without music during their study sessions.

How to choose music to help you study

If you are to study while listening to music, Olsen suggests you must consider the following points:

• Choose music with no lyrics and minimal amounts of abrupt and noticeable changes. “Distinct changes in music will capture your attention and become a source of distraction.”
• Keep the volume low so music is in the background. “People experience background music in a similar way to soft lighting – it can be relaxing and help you focus on your primary task without significant distraction.”
• Choose music that suits your personality – and what you’re working on.

Good routines matter. A steady daily rhythm, regular meals, a consistent study space, and a plan for revising a little at a time rather than all at once, helps a student feel more in control of her days. Starting revision early and working in short, regular blocks also leaves more room for everything else that keeps a young person well.

Protect sleep. The Australian Institute of Family Studies recommends that young people aged 14 to 17 get between eight and ten hours of sleep a night, yet research shows around half of older teens are not meeting this on school nights. Sleep underpins concentration, mood and emotional regulation, so it is one of the most powerful things a family can protect.

Make space for family time. headspace's guidance for supporting young people highlights that meaningful connection with family, alongside friendships, is essential to a young person's mental health and sense of belonging. A shared meal, a car trip, or simply being in the same room together all count.

Value unstructured time. Not every hour needs a purpose. Time with no agenda, to daydream, potter, read for pleasure or simply do nothing in particular, gives a young mind genuine room to rest and recover.

Keep moving. Staying active, whether through sport, a walk, dancing or walking the dog, supports physical health, mood and mental agility. It does not need to be formal exercise to count.

Be mindful of screen time. Recreational screen use, especially late in the evening, can crowd out sleep, movement and face-to-face connection. A wind-down period free of screens before bed supports better rest and a calmer start the next day.

Watch for tired bodies and tired minds. Please keep an eye on your daughter's energy, mood and enthusiasm for the things she usually enjoys. If she seems persistently flat, withdrawn or exhausted, please reach out to her Head of Year or another wellbeing staff member. Small conversations early make a real difference, and looking after wellbeing is always a shared effort between home and school.

Above all, please remind your daughter that who she is matters more than what she produces, and that rest, connection and downtime are not indulgences but essential parts of a healthy, balanced life.

The September holidays are not far away now, and they will be a well-earned chance to properly switch off.

The Book Character Parade truly was a symphony of characters thanks to the girls’ colourful and imaginative costumes. The diverse array of book characters we saw walk across the stage on Tuesday serves as a powerful reminder that characters in books can help readers navigate life, understand the world around them, and learn how to confront challenges. As readers delve deeper into these characters' lives, they also embark on a journey of self-discovery. Each character offers a unique perspective—sharing their experiences, thoughts, emotions, and advice, while also revealing how others react to their circumstances. Readers can take the wisdom and insights gained from these characters and apply them to their own lives. The characters found in books become like trusted friends, always ready to offer comfort and guidance—just open a book, and they’re there waiting for you. The parade was a great success; thank you to our parents for creating fabulous costumes, the staff for supporting their students, Annette Box for coordinating the event and Regina Brennan for conducting the P-1 choir, Piccolo, for their performance and to the staff for supporting their students and getting into the spirit of Book Week.

The week’s celebrations also included visits from the authors Emily Serow and Allison Rocca. ‘Meeting “real authors” and the brilliant mind behind favourite books have numerous benefits including enhancing literacy skills and reading culture, while also opening students’ eyes to real-world writing careers, a career pathway they may not have even considered.

Fairytales came to life this week when the theatre group Shake and Stir performed - the Prep to Year 5 girls loved the experience of live theatre. Book Week is such a special celebration and is a reminder of the importance of reading for at least 20 minutes a day. Thank you to the many parents who took advantage of our book fair to buy books to supplement home libraries. The habit of reading for a small amount of time has a big impact as the reader will have:  

• Exposure to 1.8 million words expand vocabulary and language fluency
• Exposure to new ideas strengthens curiosity and critical thinking
• Daily reading builds background knowledge across subjects
• Short, consistent sessions compound into lifelong learning
• Reading engages the brain more deeply than most passive activities

The takeaway is those quiet minutes with a book are doing far more than we realise. They shape how we communicate, imagine, and understand the world, therefore a commitment to reading is more than one week a year.

Science also came alive in classrooms across the primary school with students exploring fluffy slime, the physics of flight, parachutes, non-Newtonian fluids and chemical science. It was a week full of curiosity, creativity and experimentation. A special thank you to our dedicated teachers for their commitment to providing the girls with these wonderful opportunities to explore, question and discover the world of science.

This week, we are celebrating Book Week by welcoming visiting authors Allison Rocca and Emily Serow and sharing in the wonderful world of books and reading. We also welcomed Shake & Stir for a magical Book Week themed show, as well as holding our ever-exciting Book Character Parade, where our PP–4 students certainly did not disappoint. Tomorrow, we look forward to our Years 5 and 6 Arts Spectacular, showcasing the creativity and talents of our students.

Week 10 Parent-Teacher and Student-Led Interviews

In Week 10, on Thursday afternoon and Friday, families will have the opportunity to meet with teachers and, for students in Years 5 and 6, participate in student-led interviews. These conversations are an important part of the partnership between home and school, providing time to acknowledge progress, discuss learning and identify meaningful goals for the next stage of the year.

For families of students in Prep and Year 1, interviews will be held with your daughter’s form teacher. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to discuss her social, emotional and academic development, as well as her engagement with routines, friendships and early learning experiences.

Families of students in Years 2 to 4 will have the opportunity to meet with both their daughter’s form teacher and mathematics teacher, and are encouraged to book two separate interviews. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of each student’s learning, including wellbeing, classroom engagement and curriculum progress.

For students in Years 5 and 6, interviews will take the form of student-led conferences. This format provides an opportunity for students to take greater ownership of their learning by leading the discussion with their families. Students will share their strengths, reflect on areas for growth and discuss the goals they are working towards, with their teachers contributing to the conversation as needed.

These interviews play an important role in strengthening the connection between home and school. They offer families valuable insight into their daughter’s learning journey and create space for purposeful conversations about effort, achievement and next steps. For students participating in student-led interviews, the process also supports confidence, communication skills and a growing sense of responsibility for learning.

All interviews will be booked through Parent Lounge, with the booking portal opening Monday 31 August at 7.00am. We warmly encourage all families to attend and take part in these important conversations.

Professional Women's Networking Breakfast Performances

Thank you to Yuna (Year 8) who gave an amazing performance on flute of the third movement of Reinecke’s Flute Concerto (3rd mvt), accompanied by Mr Ng at the recent Professional Women’s Networking Breakfast. The performance was sparkling and virtuosic and thoroughly appreciated by everyone in attendance. Thank you also to the Sculthorpe String Quartet who entertained guests as they arrived and networked prior to the breakfast.

Music Fest 

Congratulations to the Stage Band who performed at Music Fest on Friday evening last week. Music Fest provides a platform for primary and secondary students to showcase their talents in a supportive concert environment. The Stage Band received a silver award and had the opportunity to workshop their pieces and receive valuable feedback from the adjudicator. This was a fantastic achievement and a wonderful experience for the Stage Band. Congratulations to all girls involved and their conductor Mr Sean Mackenzie!

Music Dinner 

The music captains are very excited to announce the theme for this year’s Music Dinner will be MUSIC ICONS! Music Dinner will be held in Term 4 on Friday 9 October from 5:30pm and is a wonderful event where we can celebrate the achievements of our music students throughout the year and also acknowledge our outgoing music seniors. Students (and parents) are encouraged to come along dressed according to the theme. We always love seeing everyone’s creativity! All music students in Years 7-12 involved in music ensembles are encouraged to attend. Any Year 6 students involved in music ensembles are also welcome to join us for the evening (and will be chaperoned by a music staff member). Parents of students in Years 9-12 who have been involved in the Co-curricular music program for the year are welcome to attend. Should extra tickets become available, parents of Years 6-8 attending the music dinner will be given the opportunity to also purchase tickets.

Tickets are $82.50 for students and $110 for adults and are available only through this link. For catering purposes, it is imperative you include any dietary requirements and payments are made by 5:00pm, Tuesday 22 September. Please be mindful there is a capped number, so book your tickets early! The cut-off time allows the Music Support Group and Catering to finalise purchasing of perishable goods and appropriate table allocations prior to the event. Viva La Musica!

Stradivari Strings, Jackson Wind Ensemble, Volare and Encorah are very much looking forward to presenting performances at the upcoming Viva La Musica concert to be held in the Phillip Harris Gym on Monday 14 September at 6:30pm. This will be a fantastic opportunity for these ensembles to showcase their hard work throughout 2026. This will be their final performance for the year as auditions will be held in Week 3 of Term 4 for 2027 ensembles. We look forward to having many in attendance to support the students. Over the last week, St Margaret’s Club Netball celebrated the end of another season with a total of 40 teams playing each week. Whilst our non-competitive teams STM 38,39 and 40 have two more games for the season, the following competitive teams will play in semi finals this coming Saturday, STM 1,5,9,11,12,13,17,18,19, 24 and 29. Congratulations to Club Netball players, coaches, parents and supporters for the 2026 season and good luck to our semi-finalists!

Our next Girls in Gaming event will take place on Saturday, 5 September at St Margaret’s and we wish our esports teams every success in this event. St Margaret’s will then also be hosting the second QGSSSA Esports tournament on Friday, 23 October in the Philip Harris Gym. We look forward to welcoming QGSSSA schools to this tournament and potentially playing some new titles during the event.

This Friday, 28 August will be Practice Meet #4 for our QGSSSA Athletics squad at the State Athletics Centre. Please see details on the Athletics page for venue and event timings. A big thank you to our parent support group for providing a snack pack for our athletes last Friday. Students will also receive a snack pack at our final meet coming up on Friday, 11 September.

This Saturday, 29 August marks Head of the River for our St Margaret’s Rowers. A day that these students have been working hard and training diligently towards, many, since the beginning of the year. We look forward to seeing the supporter headland as a sea of Maggies supporters and thank the students who will be heading out on the supporter bus to show St Margaret’s in action.

Adding to her recent success with the Australian Stingers World Cup Bronze Medal, Bless Daly has been part of the winning Australian team at the Under 18s Womens Water Polo World Championships in Spain. Bless was also voted Tournament MVP scoring a total of 42 goals across the tournament! Congratulations Bless.

Also in Water Polo representative news, congratulations to Lucy S, Annabelle S and Ruby C for their Runners Up performance as part of the Queensland team in the Interstate exchange against NSW. The team was also coached by our own St Margaret's Club Water Polo Head Coach, Zac Hudson.

Year 11 Term 4 2026 (Year 12 2027) Booklist

The Booklists for Year 11 Term 4 2026 (Year 12 2027) are due 28 August. Families can order online at www.campion.com.au.  

Orders received after the cutoff date will be packed as soon as possible; however, Campion Education cannot guarantee delivery of these orders prior to commencement of Term 4.

Families new to St Margaret’s are required to create an account by clicking on the “Parents Order Here” button located top right-hand corner of the Campion website.  A four-character code is required to access the 2027 resource list and the code for St Margaret’s is HJH7. 

Booklists for Pre-Prep to Year 11 2027 will follow in early Term 4.

When Chelsey joined Allens in Brisbane in 1996, she joined Australia's oldest law firm. Founded in 1822, before Queensland even existed, Allens had already weathered generations of economic, technological and social change.

Aspiring Young Women’s Network Breakfast with guest speaker, Dr Louisa Sondergeld (’13)

From the classrooms, rowing sheds and music rooms of St Margaret’s to a career in medicine, Dr Louisa Sondergeld has followed a pathway shaped by curiosity, service and a deep commitment to caring for others.

After graduating from St Margaret’s, Louisa completed a Bachelor of Science with an Extended Major in Psychology, followed by a Doctor of Medicine. Her medical training and early career took her through St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where she became a published researcher with the Cardiac Transplant Team, and later to Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital, where she developed her skills as a clinician, lecturer and mentor.

Louisa is now a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and works as a General Practitioner at Walton Bridge Medical Centre in The Gap. She has a special interest in paediatrics, women’s health, men’s health and palliative care, and continues to support the next generation of doctors as a lecturer and mentor to medical students.

Join Louisa as she shares her journey from St Margaret’s to medicine, reflecting on leadership, service, study and the many pathways that can lead to a meaningful and fulfilling career. Her story will offer students and community members valuable insight into what it means to build a life centred on purpose, care and contribution.
