The Mayo Arts Festival is a fabulous opportunity for our community to come together but is also an important fundraiser for the school and, in conjunction with the much-appreciated generosity of donors and sponsors, assists the school to continually grow our art collection to inspire today’s and future generations of St Margaret’s students.

Our school community including students, parents, teachers, and support staff have worked tirelessly to make this event an enormous success, and it would be wonderful if you could join us on that day.

Schools are busy places and I know Saturday sport and other commitments will impact on some people’s ability to attend. However, the festival runs from 10am right through to 7pm, so hopefully you can find a window to enjoy the festival. Here is a link to the program outlining all the fun of the fair, and there are further details in the Mayo section of this newsletter. I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday 27 July.

That will be a big week as we are also celebrating the 10^th anniversary of the Ponytail Project. This will take place on Tuesday 30 July. Current students, staff and parents and even past students have committed to take at least 15cms off their hair for sponsorship funds in support the Queensland Cancer Council and the Amanda Minotti Trust. St Margaret’s is a busy place throughout the year, and our most recent holidays saw a lot of girls involved in many activities with the school. We had our rowing camps for all age groups, and I thank our Head of Rowing - Jack Armitage, Rowing Coordinator – Flynn Lynam, and Director of Sport – Lloyd Knight for their organisation of these successful events, as well as all the staff and parents who assisted with the camps. The rowing season starts this week so we wish our rowers all the best for a wonderful season.

Our netball QISSN team had an amazing competition, winning all their games to then take out the Division 3 premiership. Congratulations, girls! Thank you to our Netball Coordinator – Gayle Coutts, Camille Poupardin and Maggie Ryan for their care, coaching and coordination of the girls.

Finally, I was fortunate to join our Music Tour to Europe, where two ensembles (vocal and wind) took part in the Bratislava Youth Music Festival and also experienced performing in the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg and Prague Hlahol Concert Hall. Not only did our girls have an amazing time, they also gained incredible performance experience, and it was wonderful to witness their growth musically throughout this time. Thank you to Brad King – Head of Performance, as well as Regina Brennan and Dr Camille Syntagerous (conductors) for their coordination of the tour.

We are entering a season where we celebrate many strong women of faith. We celebrate St Margaret of Antioch (with our St Margaret’s Day Celebrations), a young woman, of whom not much is known. Margaret got on with the important things; she stayed true to what she believed in, standing up for these things, and living out her faith in daily life, right where she was. Let us be inspired by the great women and men of faith who lived with courage, compassion and integrity, even when the world did not make sense.

When the world feels overwhelming, with its conflicts, division and absurdity, remember that the world also feels wonderful, with its vibrancy, diversity and community. Lets choose kindness.

Our senior girls provide the input into the schedule, and with a little tweaking from the staff, we were able to take advantage of the beautiful winter weather to host an array of activities, mostly outdoors. Enjoying a night under the stars on Friday night, the girls rugged up for a movie night on Circular Drive, enjoying hot chocolates, treats and each other’s company.

Saturday afternoon saw the great Masterchef cookoff take place. The girls were divided into their teams, which comprised girls from each year level, and given the task of cooking a main course and dessert to be presented and tasted at the end of the cookoff. The groups also had to theme their presentation table based on the county of origin for their recipes as well as choreograph a dance routine themed to their group’s dishes. Some amazing dishes and entertaining dances were the result of the hectic two-hour activity.

Saturday evening provided the opportunity for the girls to let off steam and just have some fun at Carnival night. The chefs provided an array of carnival food for the girls to savour in between having turns on the bucking bull or the giant adventure slide all while listening to some great tunes from the DJ. The highlight of the evening was the seniors all having the opportunity to “dunk” Ms Fowler in the dunk tank. It took a number of throws before the ball hit the target and Ms Fowler fell to the roar of very loud cheering.

Sunday saw the dawn of another beautiful day for the running of the annual Amazing Race. After being transported to the city, the girls were presented with their predetermined route back to the school. Working out the clues to the checkpoints along the way enabled the teams to earn points. There were also bonus points for extra activities partaken in along the way. On return to Circular Drive, the girls were welcomed back with a surprise Colour Run Obstacle course, which ended in a lot of laughs and some very colourful boarders.

A wonderful weekend was had by all who participated and the memories created will be ones looked back on for a long time to come, particularly for our outgoing seniors.

Year 12 Academic Progress Meetings

This week, I started meeting with Year 12 students to do a final check in on their progress and to discuss their plans moving forwards. ATAR eligible students will receive an updated ATAR prediction based on their first two internal results. Students are to book these meetings via the POD and parents are welcome to attend these meetings either in person or via phone/Teams.

Year 12 2025 Parent Information Evening

In Week 4, we will be holding the Year 12 2025 Parent Information Evening. The purpose of this evening is to explain the QCE system in more detail and to provide more information regarding the girls’ final year of school. This event will be livestreamed and also recorded for any parents unable to make the evening in person. Please keep an eye out on the POD for more information.

Interestingly, themes emerged among the applications for positions of student leadership this year. Applicants refer to the strong example set by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent (SSA). Since its inception, the SSA has been responsible for the establishment and nurturing of several schools and children's homes throughout Queensland. We are fortunate to be able to have on-going contact with the Sisters through special functions held at St Margaret's. Our students look to the Sisters for their example of servant leadership and the care and compassion with which they lead. Previous student leaders have also served as strong role models to our current student leaders.

From those examples and experiences, the current students have an enhanced understanding of leadership. Their personal observation helps them to understand that leadership entails duty, a sense of service, as well as involvement with younger students. As a consequence of watching those who have previously held leadership positions, the Year 11 cohort has noted the benefits of leading students in younger year levels. Applications have highlighted the need to balance study commitments with leadership responsibilities and the demands of having to be a role model 'all the time'.

The upcoming interview process will allow the interview panel to learn more about the outstanding personal qualities of the students making application for school captains. All applicants have shown such confidence, energy, and wisdom, along with other personal qualities, and so provide me with the assurance that there is great capacity in our Year 11 cohort.

Our current Year 12 student leaders show us that leadership is the ability to bring a group of people together and work toward a common goal. We watch them motivate and guide others, bringing the best qualities out of each person and using their talents for the betterment of the group.

This year a Design Market will be held in the Arts Centre Foyer with many artists selling their beautiful creations such as jewellery, sculpture and ceramics, so meet the artist and buy their beautiful wares. Interesting and unique goods will also be available from the market stalls in Eton Hall and Eton Courtyard.

The Barley Sugar Garden will play host to many activities including lucky dip, games, face painting and bracelet making while Petrie Street will come alive with rides. Don’t forget to prepurchase a ride band – details on how to purchase are in the Mayo section of this eNews. A new addition for this year will be the petting zoo just inside Gate 1.

A variety of food will be available from food trucks on Circular Drive. After you have purchased your food, head to the Terraces to sit, take in the views, sip on an Aperol Spritz or G&T from the Comiskey Distillery Bar and be entertained by the music program which will run all day from 12pm through to 7pm.

Hayley has assembled a team of clinical psychologists, program developers, educators, filmmakers, and storytellers to create and deliver the resources your daughters are working with in class. Using their collective expertise, they create cutting-edge wellbeing programs using documentary films to engage and upskill students, parents/caregivers and teachers.

This year, we introduced Year 4 to the program, and we intend to expand the program’s reach. The girls have responded very positively to the digital resources, which are contemporary, current, and relevant. You may have seen additional posts on The POD for parents to keep you informed of the range of topics being explored and to provide advance insights to continue the conversation at home and to further the home-school partnership, which is crucial to the success of such programs. Open Parachute assists students to build resilience and the capacity to face challenges, and allows for self-reflection on their learning and experiences as they encounter topics such as friendship challenges, self-esteem, communication, emotional awareness, and social media.

But the learning does not end with the students. Besides there being many caregiver resources available to you online, Open Parachute are for the first time offering a series of complimentary webinars for parents as part of their commitment to supporting our wellbeing goals. Throughout Term 3 this year, they will discuss five very important topics that affect parents and their children. In the first webinar, clinical psychologist Dr Nicole Sokor will discuss children and anxiety. On Friday 26 July 2024, students in Years 3,4 and 5 will be providing some pre Mayo Festival entertainment. Please note this is a special performance opportunity for our Years 3 and 4 Strings students and our Year 5 Band students, in addition to the performances by our extra-curricular ensembles on Saturday 27 July. A stage will be set up on Circular Drive and parents are invited to come and hear the performances from 9:00am – 10:00am.

STM Interhouse Athletics

House pride was on full display at last week’s Secondary School Interhouse Athletics Carnival.

Well done to our St Margaret's girls who competed for their house and to our supporters who demonstrated spirit in their colourful ensembles on the sidelines.

The day's highlights included the St Margaret’s Gift, of which Jelena B of Tennyson House was crowned fastest girl in the school.

Thank you to our House Captains and staff who were instrumental in the coordination of the day.

The final scores are being tallied so stay tuned for the winning house to be revealed soon.

STM Tennis Cup

Over the school holidays, St Margaret’s Tennis conducted the annual Tennis Cup. These intra-school matches determined the St Margaret’s Tennis Champions for the Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Boarding divisions.

All girls participated with great spirit in the elimination format, with the following students winning their respective competitions:

During the competition, we also hosted a friendly round-robin doubles competition. Abby McL. and Scarlett K. emerged victorious, proving to be a dominant force.

Thank you to Rise Tennis, our St Margaret’s Tennis provider, for coordinating the event, and to the Tennis Support Group for their support in providing prizes and snacks throughout the day.

Rides and Activities

Ride armbands are now on sale. St Margaret’s students and friends can ride all day with an armband. Pre purchase for $40 or purchase on the day from the Merchandise Stall for $45. Individual ride tickets will also be available. The rides will kick off at 11am and finish at 5pm while the animal farm will operate between 11am and 3pm.

For our younger St Margaret’s students and perhaps younger siblings or family members, please note there are age/height restrictions on some rides which are listed on the Trybooking page. Individual ride tickets might be a better value option for smaller children.

In addition to the amusement rides, there will also be a number of fun activities including lucky dip, lob a choc, Golf Central Putt Putt, face painting and crazy hair and bracelet making.

Food and Drinks

There will be a range of delicious food offerings from some of Brisbane’s best food trucks around Circular Drive including Bill’s Burgers, El Corazon, Roam’ In Pizza, OMG Donuts, Gelato a Go Go, Samurai Kitchen and coffee from Tipple and Tamper.

A breakfast BBQ will serve up delicious fare while on Petrie Street, near the amusement rides, you will find Potato Slinkys and Dippin’ Dots.

Of course, all the traditional fair style food options will also be available with stalls including snow cones, fairy floss, popcorn and lollies in addition to the famous Mayo Bake Sale sponsored by Clear Insurance.

The Comiskey Distillery Bar will open at 12pm and run into the evening serving up a wide selection of drinks including signature cocktails. A mixologist will be shaking and stirring from 4pm to 7pm.

Market Stalls

Browse the more than 30 market stalls showcasing the work of Brisbane and Queensland artists and artisans. This year, we are excited to launch a new design market at the Festival, which will replace the gallery exhibition held in previous years. Some wonderful artists including Barbara Heath, Carly Scoufos, Paula Boo, Tracy Murray and Mari Hirata will be in attendance at the event with their pieces available for sale. The design market will be held in the Arts Centre Foyer and will complement an additional 20 artisan market stalls in Eton Hall and Eton Courtyard selling everything from homewares, jewellery, clothing, ceramics and paintings.

We are also pleased to have several of our entrepreneurially minded students who have elected to have a stall at Mayo this year and we encourage you to support their small business ideas. 

Live entertainment

Enjoy music performances on the main stage on Circular Drive from 12pm through until 7pm. There will also be pop-up musical performances around the school grounds as well. Our dance and drama students will also perform throughout the day.

This year we will exhibit more student visual art than ever before, providing a platform for our students to share their work and talents with the community.

So far,  around 173 current students, staff, parents and past students have registered to rock the chop or raise funds in other ways.

If you are a current parent who is rocking the chop with us on Tuesday 30 July, we do need to know to expect you, so we are asking any parent who intends cutting their ponytail to complete this form (PLEASE NOTE, STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO COMPLETE THIS FORM).

The main event will be held on Circular Drive at 1pm on Tuesday 30 July. Those parents lopping their ponytail will need to arrive by 12.45pm.

St Margaret’s donates the ponytails to Real Fringe Hair Bands. Here are some frequently asked questions about the process of cutting the hair. 

I want to donate my hair, but it is coloured.

That is no problem at all, we accept both natural and dyed hair, even funky purple shades.

How long does the hair have to be?

We accept hair as short as 15cm and as long as you like over 15cm.

How is hair collected from a donor?

For hair donations, hair must be washed and dried prior to cutting. At school, the hair will be sectioned into a ponytail, or multiple ponytail bunches if the hair is very thick. Elastic bands are applied to the bunch of hair at the top closest to the head. The band needs to be quite tight to secure the hair during transport. The hair is then cut at least 1cm above the elastic band. The hair donation is then placed in a ziplock bag and mailed to Real Fringe Hair Bands. If you are having your hair cut at school, we will section your hair and supply the elastic bands ready for cutting and a ziplock bag.

Please note, when we say ‘rock the chop’, while we have professional hairdressers - our lovely friends at Rogue Hair Hamilton (https://www.roguehair.com.au) - it really is a quick chop. You may wish to follow up with your hairdresser (or go ‘Rogue’) to refine your new shorter style. Rogue is offering a $70 shampoo, cut and blowdry for those who #rockthechop on the day.

We are very excited to inform you that St Margaret’s OSHC has subscribed to a fantastic online Booking and Waitlist management program called QK Enrol. This program will give you access to manage your own account information, where you will have the ability to make bookings requests and allows you to complete and submit an online enrolment form for your child. You can do this and much, much more all within a parent portal called ’My Family Lounge’.

Mothers' Luncheon - Tickets on sale
A friendly reminder that a few tickets remain for the St Margaret's Mothers' Luncheon. This annual event is a wonderful opportunity for members of the St Margaret’s community to come together and connect.

Time:                  11.30am - 2.30pm
Venue:                Brisbane City Hall
Tickets:               $180 per person - includes a 2 course lunch and a 3 hour deluxe drinks package including Australian sparkling wine. All tickets will be sold individually and will require full name, email address and mobile phone number to be entered at the time of booking.
Tables:                Maximum table capacity is 10 people. Seating requests can be made by nominating a Table Captain or Year Group at the time of booking. Best efforts will be made to meet any requests.

Children of Old Girls’ Photo

This year, the Children of Old Girls’ photo will be taken on Monday 22 July at 8:50am in Eton Hall. Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren are invited to join in this group photo capturing the students of our St Margaret’s multi-generational families.
