As you may be aware, we have a number of staff on leave. Therefore, in their place, we warmly welcome to St Margaret’s new members of staff: Mr Barton Truasheim (Maths and Science); Ms Megan Lewis ( Maths); Ms Lauren Wright (HPE); Leila Devine (Primary STEM); Elise Wilkinson (Primary – Year 3) and we welcome back into the Primary school, Mr Michael Crowe (Primary – Year 6).

Term 3 promises to be yet another very busy term.

This year’s St Margaret’s Day Celebration will be held on Friday 24 July and is marked by a special assembly and service in which we will celebrate the legacy of past Principals, with a focus on Sister Mary, who remains the longest serving Principal at 24 years.

In addition to our special assembly, in the afternoon, we have the traditional St Margaret’s Run – which starts on Circular Drive.

St Margaret’s Day celebrations are followed by a whole weekend dedicated to the reunions of Past Staff and Old Girls from prior to 1956, and 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006, 2016, and an Old Girls’ Chapel on Sunday. This year we are expecting just short of 400 past students.

It is an important weekend in our school calendar, as it is a wonderful opportunity for our past students to reconnect with their school mates, and with the school.

In addition to St Margaret’s Day, there are two other significant events occurring early in Term 3 – The Ponytail Project and the Mayo Arts Festival. I will be talking more about Mayo in next week’s newsletter.

Congratulations to all those involved in raising funds for the Ponytail Project. Three staff members and 145 students, with the support of community members, are currently seeking donations to support the Cancer Council and the Amanda Minotti Family. It has been exciting to watch the sponsorship efforts of our students grow in support of people who have been impacted by cancer. Thank you, yet again, for your generosity for such an important and worthy cause. Throughout the trip, I witnessed remarkable growth in our students. They embraced new challenges and stepped well beyond their comfort zones—whether learning practical skills such as using a shovel, mixing concrete and snorkelling for the first time, or immersing themselves in a culture and way of life very different from their own. Most importantly, they developed a deeper understanding of gratitude, perspective and the importance of service. The experience reinforced that we can live with less, appreciate what we have, and recognise that we are part of a diverse and interconnected world.

In the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing more of our adventures and the many lessons we learned with the wider school community.

To the students who travelled with us, thank you. Your resilience, compassion, gratitude and willingness to embrace every opportunity were truly inspiring. You represented St Margaret’s with distinction and embodied the values of our school community.

To the parents who entrusted us with your daughters, thank you for allowing them to undertake this life-changing experience. The learning that occurred extended far beyond the classroom and will remain with them for many years to come.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank Caitlin McCluskey, Alison Ward and Jake Compton for their generosity, dedication and commitment to this initiative. Their support was invaluable. I am excited to explore further service-learning opportunities for St Margaret’s students in 2027 and beyond.

St Margaret’s Day Anglicare Donation Drive

Each year, as part of our St Margaret’s Day celebrations, we proudly support Anglicare through a donation drive for those in need. This year, we are proud to support Anglicare Southern Queensland's Youth Homelessness Accommodation Project (YHAP), which has been selected as the school's charity.

In just a few months the service will open its doors to young people and young families who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness. Located in Beenleigh, the purpose-built accommodation will provide safe housing and wrap around support to help young people build stability, independence and a brighter future.

As Anglicare prepares to welcome its first residents to the service, the St Margaret's community has an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution by donating items to create Welcome Home Hampers for the young people and families moving into the accommodation.

Being a Boarder Captain and Boarder Prefect at St Margaret’s is a unique honour. It represents the voice of the boarding house and provides an opportunity to influence positive change, uplift others, and build a strong sense of unity and pride among our boarding community. These students are not only role models for their peers but also demonstrate our boarding spirit for our younger boarders who look up to them each day.

Our boarding leaders are responsible for helping to uphold the values of our school and boarding community. They assist with routines, support boarding staff, and help lead house meetings and events. Most importantly, they are there to encourage, inspire, and support their fellow boarders.

Leadership in the Boarding House involves:

• Welcoming and mentoring younger boarders, helping them feel at home and included.
• Promoting positive behaviour and standards, such as assisting with uniform checks at the dining hall and encouraging adherence to expectations.
• Planning and hosting events, such as closed weekends, cultural celebrations, and fun social nights that build community spirit and allow every girl to feel seen and celebrated.
• Listening and advocating, being a point of contact when boarders need someone to talk to.
• Leading by example, showing initiative, empathy, and consistency in all areas of boarding life.

These positions demand commitment, emotional intelligence, and a passion for community, but the rewards are many. Boarder Prefects and Captains often say it’s the most fulfilling role they’ve held at school, offering personal growth, confidence, and life-long memories of service and friendship.

As our current Year 11 boarders courageously share their hopes and vision for the year ahead, we acknowledge their willingness to step into leadership with open hearts and open minds. To each applicant we are proud of you already. Your desire to serve your boarding community speaks volumes about your character.

We wish you the very best in your leadership applications. May you find joy in the process, pride in your effort, and strength in knowing you’re already making a difference.

Secondary Assessment Policy

A reminder that all students should familiarise themselves with the Secondary Assessment Policy, which can be found on the POD. In particular, I would like to draw attention to the checkpoint and drafting expectations. Checkpoints and drafts are important in assisting students to manage their time effectively, giving goal posts along the way to a larger task, and develop strategies to submit completed assessment by the due date. They also provide opportunities for teachers to gather evidence of completed work prior to the due date and implement intervention if required. Students and parents should note that failure to meet a checkpoint will result in parents/carers (and boarding house staff where applicable) being contacted by the teacher and the relevant Head of Faculty and Dean of Studies/Academics being informed. If a student fails to submit a genuine attempt of a completed draft by the due date, it will result in parents/carers (and the boarding house staff where applicable) being contacted, the relevant Head of Faculty and Dean of Studies/Academics being informed and an afterschool Academic Detention being issued.

The purpose of these sessions is to provide girls with a quiet and well-resourced space that is conducive to productive homework and study time. Each SSS will be staffed by up to two tutors, who offer advice and guidance on how to plan effectively for upcoming assessments. The SSS tutor group is made up of ten young women who are currently studying at university and have much to offer our girls in the way of study skills.

For students attending SSS after an afternoon of sport, transport is available to and from Windsor Park. For those staying on after school to attend SSS, the Eunice Centre is open until 5pm prior to the commencement of the study sessions.

Parent Teacher Interviews

I would like to thank parents, carers, students and teachers on the collaborative and congenial way in which they engaged at Secondary Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday. The start of a new semester is always an opportune time for students to be introspective on the successes and challenges from their previous semester, and to consider practical steps they can take for improvement.

To this end, over the coming weeks all Years 7 to 12 students will be working with their Academic Advisors or Form Teachers to map out their Learning Pathsfor Semester 2 on Learning Analytics, which includes the development of three S.M.A.R.T. goals. Progression towards these goals will be evaluated by the students throughout the semester, and I would warmly welcome them becoming a source of discussion at the dinner table.

At school, we prioritise inclusive communities through pastoral care, peer support and opportunities for collaboration. We encourage students to show kindness, speak up for others and ask for help when needed.

Families play a vital role by fostering open communication and reminding young people that they are not alone in navigating challenges. Simple acts—listening without judgement, sharing time together—strengthen this sense of connection.

When students feel they belong, they are more likely to take healthy risks, seek support and develop empathy for others. Belonging is not just a feeling; it is a cornerstone of wellbeing and lifelong growth.

Workshops

Our exciting workshop program is designed for children, teens and adults who love creating. Whether your child enjoys painting, designing, science or making, there is an inspiring workshop waiting for them at this year's festival. This year we feature several artists including a Mosaic artist and renowned artist Pip Spiro, who will run a special Mother Daughter Watercolour workshop.

Petrie Street will be transformed into a vibrant mini sideshow alley, featuring carnival rides, a silent disco and an animal farm. Ride wristbands are now available and provide unlimited access to participating rides throughout the day, allowing students, families and friends to enjoy the fun as many times as they like between 11:00am and 5:00pm

Barley Sugar Garden

The Barley Sugar Garden will be a hub of activity throughout the day. Be sure to purchase our unique festival currency, Mayo Money, which can be used at all school-run stalls throughout the day. From Lob-a-Choc and Lucky Dip to face painting, hair braiding, fairy floss, popcorn and the Craft Cart in Barley Sugar Garden, there will be plenty of opportunities for students to spend their Mayo Money while enjoying these much-loved festival attractions. These popular activities are always a highlight and are sure to keep children entertained throughout the day.

Market Stalls

Eton Hall and the adjoining courtyard will be abuzz with shoppers wandering the artisan market stalls selling everything from art and ceramics to homewares and jewellery. Also in the Arts Centre Foyer will be Student Market Stalls, where our budding entrepreneurs have developed a business idea and will be selling their wares. 

Food and Treats

We will have several food trucks returning to Mayo offering a delicious range of savoury and sweet food options. We welcome the Yo-Get-It Food Truck to this year's festival.

Be sure to stop by and enjoy one of their delicious treats throughout the day.

Entertainment

In the Arts Centre and adjacent Circular Drive classrooms, we will be showcasing the work of our visual arts students. You will also be able to view the winners of this year’s Mayo Student Art competition on display including Year 5 student Madeleine’s work which inspired this year’s Mayo t-shirt design. 

Throughout the day visitors will be entertained by the many performance groups. While the children are entertained, parents and friends can gather at the bar to enjoy a drink while soaking up the festival atmosphere and taking in the city views.

Thank you to the many families who have already supported the Mayo Arts Festival through generous donations. We have received plenty of chocolate blocks, bars and fun-sized chocolates.

We are still seeking donations of cans of soft drink, wine and juice boxes/poppers.

Donations can be dropped off at the Primary Office or the Marketing Office (just off the Barley Sugar Garden).

Thank you for helping us make this year's Mayo Arts Festival a memorable event for our community.  Entry is free to the festival, parking will be limited around the school but a free shuttle bus will run between Oriel Park and Gate 2 from 11:00am and 3:00pm.

As a result of this process, there may be changes to your child’s Mathematics, Core Literacy, Cluster, or Spelling group this semester. These adjustments are based on current data and are made to ensure each student is placed in a group that best supports their progress and extends their learning. Your child may be assigned a different teacher or a new group of peers. In some cases, a teacher may continue with their current group; in others, they may begin working with a different group.

All grouping decisions are made thoughtfully and with a clear focus on student growth. Our flexible approach allows us to respond to the needs of learners and provide an environment in which every student is supported, challenged, and given the opportunity to thrive.

Previewing Semester 2 Learning

We also acknowledge the vital role families play in supporting their child’s learning journey. One way we foster this partnership is by offering opportunities for students to preview upcoming content an approach that promotes confidence, engagement, and deeper connections between new learning and prior knowledge.

To support this, parents and carers can access a preview of their daughter’s learning via the Year Level POD Subject pages. These previews offer an overview of the key content and a set of broad learning intentions across subject areas. Reviewing this information together at home can help students feel more prepared for classroom learning, prompt meaningful conversations, and reinforce the concepts and skills being taught. We are proud to work in partnership with you to create a rich and empowering learning experience for every student.

Practice-a-thon Fundraiser

The Music Department in conjunction with the Music Support Group are excited to once again run the Practice-a-thon fundraiser. This is a wonderful initiative organised by the Music Support Group that will both assist in raising funds for the Music Program, as well as encourage students to develop a healthy, consistent practice routine. The Practice-a-thon is open to students in the Primary school who are undertaking private music lessons, involved in co-curricular music ensembles or are a part of the Years 3 & 4 Strings Program/Year 5 Band program. Practice-a-thon forms have been delivered to all students this week (Primary music Practice-a-thon flyer 2026.pdf (PDF 267.1KB). Students (with the help of parents) are able to sign up via the QR code and seek sponsorship from friends and family to raise money based on the level of practice achieved during the period 16-29 August. There will be prizes for the students who have raised the most money, and shown the most practice, as well as two random draws. Each prize will be a hamper that will consist of a Frameo digital photo frame, a pastel writeable music folder, an Astala Luna pencil case, a Vinyl Plush pendant blind box Monster, a set of Kknekki hair ties, and pencils and stickers. We look forward to having many students signing up!

Archetti Performance

The last week of Term 2 was Under 8s week and as part of the celebrations, Archetti Strings performed for Prep, Year 1 and Year 2. Archetti Strings is St Margaret’s entry level string ensemble for students who are undertaking private music lessons. They gave wonderful performances of Sword Dance and Chicken on a Fencepost, which were thoroughly enjoyed by the students, parents and teachers in attendance. Congratulations to all the girls who performed and to Ms Rayner and Ms Vandenberg who facilitated the event.

State Honours Ensemble Program

Congratulations to all students who have recently participated in SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Program). Hosted and organised by the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium, the State Honours Ensemble Programs bring together promising primary and secondary school musicians to rehearse and perform together with renowned international and national conductors. Students work hard rehearsing music over several days, and this culminates with a performance given at the conservatorium. These programs are wonderful opportunities for our music students to further develop their musical capacity whilst also making connections with other young musicians from around the country. Two programs were held recently (South-East Qld Program and Brisbane Program) and it was wonderful to have so many students participate. Mayo Winter Wonders

As part of our Mayo Festival performances, we are very excited to invite a number of our primary beginner ensembles to perform at a special event called Winter Wonders. This will be held on Friday 31 July, the day prior to the Mayo Festival, and provide our students with the opportunity to perform on the big stage to be set up on Circular Drive. The students in the following music programs and ensembles will be performing:

• Year 3 and Year 4 Strings (Primary Strings Immersion Program)
• Year 5 Band (Primary Band Immersion Program)
• Archetti Strings (Early beginner strings ensemble)

The performance will begin at 11:00am and conclude at approximately 12:00pm. All parents and friends are warmly invited to attend. We are looking forward to hearing the wonderful performances and thank you in advance for your support of the event.

This Saturday 18 July will be the start of QGSSSA Winter Fixtures in tennis, hockey, netball and volleyball with our first fixture against Moreton Bay College. It’s the first of seven home rounds this Winter season so we look forward to having lots of support over the term. Please keep an eye on the specific sport POD pages for all fixture details and venues.

Our students were involved throughout the holidays in a number of St Margaret’s camps including Athletics and Rowing, as well as competitions. Whether these students competed or officiated as a St Margaret’s student or State/Club representative, it’s fantastic to see our students involved at a high level in their chosen sports and enjoying these opportunities. Some examples of these are:

Junior State Cup - Touch Football - Indi H, Issy C and Mia M

U13 National water polo development tournament in Hobart - Edie J, Beatrice B, Frankie R, Molly D were also involved in the u14 tournament held in Melbourne.

A note to all parents and students. A reminder to all students in relation to absentees from sport training and fixtures. If you are unable to participate in a training or a fixture, you must use the absentee register at all times. These registers are continuously monitored and then reviewed at the end of the sport season. The information from these registers is utilised as part of the pocket policy. Please do not rely on emailing or telling your coordinator about an explained or unexplained absence. You must still complete the absentee register.

A reminder to all families that students should be bringing student ID cards to all trainings and fixtures for bus travel. If you have misplaced your card, please visit school support for a new one.

To support students during cooler early morning and late afternoon training sessions, the new ¼ zip training jacket is now available for purchase. As a reminder, this jacket is not included in the HPE uniform and should not be worn during regular school hours.

Blazer Pocket Embroidery

Students requiring pocket awards embroidered onto their blazers must drop their blazers into the Supplies Shop by morning tea on a Thursday. Blazers will be available for collection approximately 2–3 weeks after drop‑off.

The new rowing thermal/under shirts are in! They’re warm, lightweight, and perfect for winter sessions.

The St Margaret's Year 12 Necklace - Class of 2026

We are pleased to share that the new St Margaret's Year 12 Necklace is now available to order.

Earlier this year, a group of Year 12 students sat down with Jimena Yudi ('01), founder of Jimena Alejandra Jewellery, to design the piece together. The girls learnt about gemstones and their meanings, discussed what they wanted the necklace to stand for, and chose the stones that best represented their cohort. For Jimena, a former lawyer turned jewellery designer and proud Old Girl, it was a "full circle" moment: a chance to give something back to the school that helped shape her.

The Class of 2026 selected:

•            Pink – Kindness

•            Champagne – Celebration

•            Peridot – Growth

The pendant design will carry forward each year, with each cohort choosing their own gemstones. Available in silver or gold with two chain lengths, the necklace is presented in a velvet keepsake box with a story card. Priced at $169, it will be presented to students at the Valedictory Dinner.

Aspiring Young Women’s Network Breakfast with guest speaker, Doctor Louisa Sondergeld (’13)

From the classrooms, rowing sheds and music rooms of St Margaret’s to a career in medicine, Dr Louisa Sondergeld has followed a pathway shaped by curiosity, service and a deep commitment to caring for others.

After graduating from St Margaret’s, Louisa completed a Bachelor of Science with an Extended Major in Psychology, followed by a Doctor of Medicine. Her medical training and early career took her through St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where she became a published researcher with the Cardiac Transplant Team, and later to Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital, where she developed her skills as a clinician, lecturer and mentor.

Louisa is now a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and works as a General Practitioner at Walton Bridge Medical Centre in The Gap. She has a special interest in paediatrics, women’s health, men’s health and palliative care, and continues to support the next generation of doctors as a lecturer and mentor to medical students.

Join Louisa as she shares her journey from St Margaret’s to medicine, reflecting on leadership, service, study and the many pathways that can lead to a meaningful and fulfilling career. Her story will offer students and community members valuable insight into what it means to build a life centred on purpose, care and contribution.

P&F General Meeting

The P&F invites all parents and caregivers to attend the next P&F General Meeting on Monday 20 July 2026.

P&F General meetings provide a valuable opportunity to connect with your school community, hear updates from the P&F and Support Groups, and help shape what’s planned for 2027.Parents will also have the opportunity to hear from Principal Ros Curtis AM, who will provide a school update and welcome questions from the floor.

All parents and caregivers are welcome to attend in person or via Microsoft Teams.
