St Margaret’s digital technologies students are being given the opportunity to learn the art of photographic and cinema technology with equipment at the forefront of the industry.
The students in Years 9 and 10 have access to a Chroma green screen, GoPros, studio lighting and various computer software that allows them to edit and manipulate their photos and footage.
Secondary teacher Chris Forster said the equipment enhances classroom learning for the students.
“The girls are getting great enjoyment using the green screen technology. Just like in the movies, they act in front of the screen and then apply various editing techniques to remove the green screen and edit themselves on to different backgrounds.
“The whole process is very insightful and engaging for the girls,” said Mr Forster.
The Year 9s have been using the green screen technology as part of their Photoshop studies to create and manipulate images for a website they have built.
The Year 10 students have been using the green screen for video production, editing their videos in Corel videostudio Pro8.
These students have been studying the full filmmaking process from storyboarding to how to edit their video with animation and other functions and features.
Mr Forster said the technology gives the students a leading edge when preparing their submissions for competitions.
“The Year 10s are working in teams on a video project which not only counts toward their assessment but is also submitted to The University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize, a video competition.
“Having access to this cutting-edge equipment certainly gives the girls every opportunity to prepare a top-notch film submission.
“Last year, St Margaret’s sisters Emily (Year 12) and Ella (Year 9) won this competition so the girls are very eager to enter this year. The fact they have access to equipment that will allow them to create high quality short films is very empowering for them,” said Mr Forster.
