It is now only two weeks until this year's MAYO Festival is launched! I encourage the whole school community to support Mayo. Tickets for the opening night cocktail party (Friday 1 June) are $35; those attending this gala evening will then be amongst the first to view and purchase the 3-dimensional artworks created especially for MAYO by nationally and internationally renowned artisans across a variety of disciplines.

Following this opening, the school will embrace a more relaxed yet still creative Festival feel on the Saturday (2 June).

The Saturday Festival will be a wonderful experience for our families and friends. 25 workshops (a mixture of free and paid) are available. Further details about the workshops are available online and I thank our Acting Head of Faculty - The Arts, Lisa Smith for sourcing such an extensive range of workshops; these workshops include opportunities to create a feature wall tile using a variety of clay products and screen printing techniques; to make a sterling silver pendant or key ring under the guidance of MAYO exhibition artist Matt Dwyer; to learn to develop images in the photographic darkroom; to design and make a wearable head piece and to even learn to dance Bollywood style! The program may be downloaded from the website and I encourage you and your children to plan your personal workshop program. A hard copy of the booking sheet with workshop information is also available and details about booking and payment are on that form.

In addition to the workshops there will be artisan markets, a book stall, gourmet food and wine offerings, face painting, show bags and rides for the younger children, as well as a steady stream of entertaining music and theatre performances from our drama and music students.

The MAYO Festival is a community event both for our school and the wider community. To enhance this sense of community, we would like all families to contribute to two stalls - the cake stall and the lucky box stall. Each family will be issued with an empty cake box. Families are asked to fill the cake box with homemade goodies and deliver the labelled box to the Resource Centre Workroom on Friday 1 June before 11:00am. If you are a keen baker you might like to make homemade sweets. Cellophane bags and recipes are available from the Primary Office and Heads of Year Office.

We are also asking families to donate prizes for the lucky box. Prizes can range in value from $2.00 onwards and for all age groups and both sexes. Deliver your donations to the Heads of Year Office or your daughter's classroom in the Primary School.

MAYO offers something for everyone within our diverse community and we thank you in advance for your donations and for supporting the Festival.

The success of the MAYO Festival lies in your support, attendance and the contributions of sponsors. We are very grateful to Brand and Slater Architects, Blue Sky Alternative Investments, Fratelli Family Italian Ristorante, Style Magazine and Coco Republic for the substantial sponsorship of the MAYO Festival.

Congratulations to:

  • The Andrews Cup Cross Country team who won the Percentage Cup and came second in the Aggregate Cup.
  • Congratulations to the Premiership Year 10 Basketball team who remained undefeated champions throughout the season.
  • Past students, Jacinta Edmunds (2011) and Madeleine Edmunds (2009). Jacinta has been selected for the Under 19 Women's Quad Scull, racing in Plovdiv in Bulgaria in late August. Maddie has been selected into the Australian U23 Rowing Team. Maddie will row in the Under 23 Women's Quad Scull at the Royal Henley Regatta prior to heading to the Under 23 World Championships in Lithuania, which will be held in July this year.

NAPLAN Testing
The NAPLAN testing, conducted this week by our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students, has come under much scrutiny through the media in recent days and when such data is collated and utilised in league tables for much more than its intended purpose, there is certainly some caution warranted. Interestingly, in the same week when our students competed (maybe competed?) in the NAPLAN testing, they also participated in a diverse range of activities that did much more to develop their commitment, ethics and social responsibility than any bank of standardised testing.

Participation in the St Margaret's extra-curricular program in Term 2 is at an all-time high, with record numbers competing in QGSSSA Basketball, Touch and Soccer and even more training for the Winter fixture sports - Rowing, Netball, Tennis and Volleyball. Our QDU Debating teams are also bursting with members, with many teams successful in their Round Three QDU Debates in the last week. And once again, our outstanding Encorah Music group performed brilliantly last week at The Gap SHS in the Queensland Youth Music Awards. In the Primary School, the Cross Country competitors learnt all about teamwork and were victorious in the Percentage Cup at the Andrews Cup Championships and a record turnout of Mothers with their daughters shared breakfast together last Friday at the annual Special Ladies Breakfast on the Terraces. Whilst standardised testing has been known to produce heightened levels of anxiety and stress, the life lessons learned through participation in the rich and diverse range of activities on offer at St Margaret's will always continue to develop confidence, cooperation and compassion.

Without doubt, the scores on such high stakes testing tells us very little about the social cohesion, morale of teachers and sense of belonging and purpose created through a connection to school and the activities on offer. As teachers and parents, we must ensure to continue to provide opportunities for curiosity, exploration and mastery and continued exposure to a wide range of options, activities and arts. Interestingly, NAPLAN does none of this.

Upcoming services:
Sunday 20 May Alternative Service: WHAT! 5pm, ACF
Sunday 27 May Baptisms and Admission to Communion Years 4-7, 5pm, Chapel
Monday 28 May Year 4-7 Eucharist, 9:45am, Chapel

All welcome!

Year 4-7 Admission to Communion
Please keep the following in your prayers as they prepare for the reception as communicants in the church on 27 May: Georgina Angus-Hellyer, Jacqueline Bell, Charlotte Cattanach, Monaita Cheng, Lucinda Davidson, Sophie Gerlach-Zuch, Letitia Harper, Claudia Howse, Charlize Knudsen, Victoria Leach, Grace Miers, Ella Warner, Madeline Williams, Georgia Button, Nicola Button, Kelsey Booth, Varsha De Silva, Carina Maffett, Laura Manly, Justine Solomon, Charlotte Caro, Elizabeth Gooden, Zara Leembruggen, Xanthe Lowe-Brown, Lily Shugg, Sybella Wyatt, Phoebe Bell-Allen, Katie Hill, Allison King, Paris Martin, Hannah Witenden, Suzanne Button, Liane Mohr and Ailsa Crockett.

Please also pray for those to be baptised: Charlize Knudsen, Tristan Knudsen, Monaita Cheng, Ella Warner, Sophie Warner, Carina Maffett and Xanthe Lowe-Brown.

Reflection: I have been speaking with students about prayer recently. How to ‘do it' - what to say, when and where. The best advice is to relax and chat with God. Perhaps like the example below... or, perhaps not! But it's a start! Take a small quiet moment to be prayerful and mindful of God's presence today.

So, God, I'm... like... really busy at the moment and I don't think I have thought about you much. Not lately. Not like the time when I was sad. You know, last year when my Grandad died? Yeah, you were great then. Thanks for that. I rode my bike the other day and I slammed my shin onto the pedal and I said your name, like, loud and rude. You know, like dad does? S'pose I'm sorry about that. Um, could you make me nicer? And a bit more friendly? And could you make my sister stop playing her boy-band music. Thanks. The end. I mean, Amen.

With every blessing on you and your week ahead.

Where's the Art at the MAYO Festival?
The theme for our 2012 MAYO Festival is Illuminate and both the professional sculpture and jewellery show cocktail party evening on 1 June and festival day on Saturday 2 June will be alight with beautiful artworks made by our students. More than 100 lanterns of various styles will contribute to the Saturday performances as well as decorate the trees and terraces around the Arts Centre. The school will be transformed with light and colour. Primary and secondary Visual Art students have worked with Lismore Lantern parade and Woodford Folk Festival lantern maker, Ms Jyllie Jackson to create lanterns and sculptures of many shapes and sizes. The girls are very proud of their work and the various lantern installations will also include specially commissioned lanterns made by Jyllie's team.

Performances
Last week, Mr King wrote about the wonderful music which will be performed for the MAYO opening at school for the school community and students on Friday, the cocktail party on Friday night and on stage during Saturday afternoon and evening.

The Drama department is working with Zen Zen Zo Theatre Company to create, with Year 11 Drama students, a culminating performance on Saturday evening. We can't tell you too much, but ropes have appeared in odd places around the school and sculptural groups of chairs have begun accumulating in the Drama performance areas. Zen Zen Zo specialises in physical theatre and the performances are sure to be full of energy. Roaming Drama performances will also occur on Saturday afternoon and Year 10 Drama will present Man Friday in the Drama theatre during Saturday afternoon. Check your Festival program for details.

Donations needed for MAYO performances
The Drama Department are looking for a large number of plain wooden chairs for one of our performances during the MAYO Festival. If you happen to have any high back plain chairs (no plastics please) that you don't want returned, could you please drop them by the Arts Centre or the back of Eton Hall for collection. Similarly, we are also asking for non-returnable hard cover book donations (no magazines please) to create a performance space with.

Please contact myself via email: jchaplin@stmargarets.qld.edu.au if you have any queries or find you can help us out. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Churchie v's St Margaret's Netball for the Sony Camp
Just a final 'plug' for the Churchie v's St Margaret's Netball game today, Thursday 17 May, beginning at 4pm in the John Pigeon Sports Complex. The proceeds of the game go towards a very fine charity - The Sony Camp which is staffed by Year 11 students and staff from both schools and gives parents, with often severely disabled children, a weekend's respite as well as giving the children themselves a wonderful, fun-filled couple of days. Please feel welcome to join us in cheering for St Margaret's when we take on the boys!

SET (Senior Education and Training) Plan Interviews
As Year 10 is the first year of the senior phase of learning, attention turns to subject selection and possible future career directions. A reminder then, that it is mandatory for each girl in Year 10 to have a SET Plan interview involving our Careers Counsellor, (Ms Elizabeth Johnston - 3862 0710) and a parent or carer. For boarder parents we can arrange a Skype or phone interview to facilitate the process. While the process may appear overly bureaucratic, it is actually a fantastic opportunity for parents and daughters to sit down and discuss their individual learning pathway through the senior years, courses and future careers in the presence of someone who has a full, up-to-date knowledge of courses and careers on offer and the requirements for access.

YEAR 9 CAMP
On 2 May, the Year 9 students and their teachers headed to the beautiful Noosa North Shore Retreat for their three day camp. The girls were housed in luxurious apartments with ensuites, surrounded by kangaroos and kookaburras. They certainly made the most of having their own space to rest and recuperate between the many activities.

Many of the girls learned to surf at the nearby beach and discovered new ways to build and sail rafts. The high ropes activity allowed the girls to work together, while the flying fox and the team building activities really helped them see what they were capable of when they really put their minds to the task.

A trivia and quiz competition on the final night turned into our own version of ‘Noosa's Got Talent' as we saw some of the Year 9 students in a new light and were treated to some amazing performances. Special thanks must go to the teachers who came to supervise the girls; Mr Carson, Ms Anderson, Mr Bird, Miss Bunting, Mrs Chaplin, Ms Shaw, Ms Upton, Mrs Barlow and Mrs Batch.

YEAR 10 LEGAL STUDIES
Last Tuesday 8 May, the Year 10 Legal Studies class were given the opportunity to embark on a Criminal History Tour, organised by the Queensland Law Society in the lead up to Law Week 2012. We boarded the bus in Brisbane's CBD and were transported around the city to significant areas from its complex criminal past. Such sights included Captain Burke Park at Kangaroo Point - the area of the Mayne Murder, several buildings that were places of interest in the Fitzgerald Inquiry and the scene of the heinous vampire murders at West End. Perhaps the most intriguing visit was to the Boggo Road Jail. Here we witnessed a virtual tour of the grounds and discovered more about its past prisoners and the conditions they served time in, as well as the story of the prison's closure. The experience was incredibly valuable and relevant to the topics discussed in lessons at school. Thanks must be granted to Mrs Minotti and Ms Brumpton for organising and accompanying us on this tour, giving us a compelling insight into past crimes of our local area.

THEATRE SPORTS
Congratulations to Mrs Chaplin and the St Margaret's Theatre Sports girls for their contribution to a very entertaining evening on Tuesday 8 May in Eton Hall. St Margaret's were the host school and Mrs Chaplin's teams, the ‘Cereal Killers' and ‘Zodiacs' were quick on their feet with great ideas for their theatre sports presentations. The Music Support parents provided delightful snacks to keep both audience and performers energised through the evening.

Special Ladies Breakfast
I hope that all the mothers in our school community had a wonderful Mother's Day. I am sure everyone would agree that the Special Ladies Breakfast was a wonderful way to start the weekend celebrations. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the Arts Centre Foyer and all the visitors looked splendid in their fascinators and flowers. Thank you to Miss Surtees for her outstanding coordination of this event and Mrs Rider and Mrs Bruce for supporting the girls in their creations. As one parent reported "Mrs Rider has out done herself yet again! What will she do next??"

Thank you also to Year 4 for their beautiful song. I know their singing brought a tear to many eyes. As mothers, we appreciated the joy and unconditional love that our children give us.

"Children will not remember you for the material things you provided but
for the feeling that you cherished them."

YCDI
Tomorrow, the Student Representative Council will run our next You Can Do It (YCDI) Assembly. At this Assembly each level will share what they have learnt this term and different students will share information about the School's successes and activities they are undertaking. At this Assembly I will talk to the girls about YCDI Key - confidence.

Confidence means knowing that you will likely be successful at many things you study. It means not being afraid to make mistakes or to try something new. Examples of confident behavior are raising your hand in class to answer a hard question, attempting hard work first before asking for help or sharing a new idea with a teacher or the class.

Positive Habits of the Mind that help develop a young person's Confidence include:

  • Accepting Myself - not thinking badly about yourself when you make a mistake or when someone is mean; accepting yourself knowing that you have strengths and areas for improvement and not judging yourself on the negatives.
  • Taking Risks - wanting but not needing to be successful in things that you think are important to do; thinking that it's good to try something new even though you might not be able to do it.
  • Being Independent - wanting but not needing the approval of others; thinking that it's important to try new activities and to speak up even if your classmates think I'm silly or stupid.
  • I Can Do It - means thinking that when you are learning something new, you are more likely to be successful than you are to fail.

I think the most relevant habits of mind for our girls is ‘accepting myself' and ‘taking risks'. Many girls hold the belief that they can't make mistakes and they have to be perfect in all areas of living. I believe educators and parents can teach and role model for the girls that it is ok to make mistakes eg. if a girl is not meeting school expectations or forgets her hat and she receives a slip as a reminder. This experience then becomes a learning experience, parents and teachers can share and discuss what can be done so that this will not happen again. We all know we learn so much from our mistakes.

On Wednesday last week, the Cross Country team displayed confidence when they participated in the Andrew's Cup Cross Country Competition. The team achieved wonderful results taking out the Percentage Cup for the first time since 2007 and achieving second place in the Aggregate Cup. The following age groups achieved wonderful results:

1st - 11 years
2nd - 9 years
3rd - 12 years and over

On an individual basis, I know the girls tried their best. Each girl set a personal goal and had the confidence to try and achieve it. Some did and some didn't but they each had a go and accepted their outcome.

Angela Drysdale
Head of Primary

SPORT

Time certainly flies when having fun! It is hard to believe that there is only one game remaining in the Autumn season and only 8 days until QGSSSA Cross Country, equalling over 250 students being actively engaged in sport since January. My sincere thanks to all students, staff and coaches who have worked so hard within the 18 teams and to all families for the support you have given to your daughters and the sport.

Autumn Fixtures
On Friday 11 May it rained goals, tries and baskets against St Hilda's with 4 out of the 5 Basketball teams winning, 7 out of the 9 Touch Football teams victorious and both the Open and Junior Soccer teams experiencing success as well.

Congratulations to the Year 10 Basketball team who have completed their season and remained undefeated to become outright Premiership holders. Special mention must also be given to their Coach, Dana Woods who also guided this team to a Premiership in 2011.

Year_10_Basketball

The majority of final round of games for Touch Football and Soccer will be played against Clayfield College on Tuesday 22 May, at either Virginia Soccer Club or Shaw Park playing fields. Draws will be forwarded to all players.

Tennis Championships
Over the weekend, numerous girls from Year 4 through to Year 12 participated in the annual School Tennis Championships. With smashing serves, fabulous forehands and brilliant backhands, the girls really put on a show.

The Primary school girls that were involved enjoyed themselves greatly in their round robin competition being played on the courts right next to the older girls. The Junior and Doubles Division came to an end with Alexandra Henzell winning the Junior Division and Claire Cottam and Ashley McCarthy-Griffiths winning the Doubles division. The rest of the girls are nervously anticipating the results of their finals being held at lunch time on Friday. The Intermediate final is between Elizabeth Hood and Isobel Brown, Senior final between Claudia Gunn and Claire Cottam and the Boarder's Cup between Alexandra Henzell and Lucy Warriner. At the finals there will be a sausage sizzle where primary and secondary girls will be able to purchase a sausage for $1.50. We wish all girls participating the best of luck in their finals.

What are Lucky Envelopes? At the Race Day only, for $50 you pick an envelope, inside of which are prizes valued at a minimum of $50. Some are valued at a great deal more. It is all in the luck of the draw. We are now asking the School Community for donations to our Lucky Envelopes. Vouchers for goods or services are greatly appreciated. For example, vouchers for the movies, a beauty treatment, gift shops, the bakery, on-line shops, bottles of wine, gym membership, the choices are endless. All donations will be acknowledged on Race Day, via posters and in the eNews.

Alexandra Hope (Year 4)

Favourite book:

THE FROG PRINCESS
by E.D.Baker

What is it about?
It is about a princess who is visiting a swamp because a prince is coming to stay at her castle. At the swamp she meets a frog and the frog says "Are you a princess?" "Yes" said the princess, "How did you know?" "You just act like one." Then the frog asks her to kiss them.

Why do you like it?
I liked it because it is a very good book and you do not want to put it down and it is a breathtaking story.

Every day thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of asthma and eczema and families struggle with illness management, children's behavioural and emotional adjustment.

Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering practical ideas and support for parents of children suffering asthma or eczema. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child's illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour.

Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 3-10 year old children suffering asthma or eczema are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P free of charge as part of a University of Queensland research project.

GEO-TAGGING

Smartphone pictures and Apps can reveal your location
The pervasive nature of smartphones (iPhone, Andriod phones etc.) has generated a new era of simplicity and made many of us digital photography fans. We run around taking happy snaps of us at the café, at the beach, at the local restaurant, in our backyard or at our friends.

What you may not realise however, that every time you take a photo with your beloved iPhone that you are stamping your location on that image; much of the time this is what you want. It's great to go back over old images and be able to see exactly where you were when the photo was taken.

However, if you are not aware that location information (geo-tagging) is being captured and your children are not aware that location information is being captured I would like to bring this to your attention.

A news item from 2010 in the US details the darker side to the geo-tagging of images. It is a bit sensationalised but does make a point. We all need to be aware that should our images be made publicly available by posting on FaceBook, Flickr or other social media and sharing solutions, our travels are also made public. The key to privacy in the 21st century is to be aware of the technology in our hands and its capability and to ensure our lives are not made public but only shared with those close to us.

What to do about this?
Knowledge is the key and with the knowledge that geo-tagging is a common feature of smartphone pictures you can now take steps to control the feature. If you want to tag your location then turn the feature on ...if not then disable it. A website that can help point you in the right direction called ‘icanstalku' was originally setup to highlight the ability to geo-tag and map a person from their images.

Information on managing geo-tagging can be found HERE.

We have an obligation now to ensure that we ask questions about the privacy of our information and be aware when we are providing that information to others. Check the apps you use and the sites you share content on. Check your privacy settings on your chosen sharing site and make sure they are as private as possible.

We are all citizens of the digital age and it is easy to become complacent as the rush of new technology seems overwhelming. We tend to have an innate trust of the gadgets and the people that create these things that enhance our lives. There are so many great new capabilities that our devices provide; how would we live without them?
